Martial Way MMA has years of experience teaching the people of Hampton the techniques, methodology, and philosophy of awareness and inner calm that is the core of jiu-jitsu.
What is Jiu-jitsu?
Jiu-jitsu is a martial art which uses the opponent's own strength against them rather than pitting one's strength directly against the adversary. The main focus of jiu-jitsu is not striking but in grappling your opponent into submission.
What is the history of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu?
In the moments following his submission victory over the legendary Royler Gracie at the 2003 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships, Eddie Bravo began to experience a transition from years of traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu study under the tutelage of Professor Jean Jacques Machado. The momentum of his achievement coupled with the passion to discover new possibilities fueled Eddie's desire to develop and assemble the most complete No-Gi Jiu Jitsu curriculum.
After careful reflection, Eddie determined that the use of the Gi in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, an art predicated on strong grips of the collar and sleeve, was simply not crossing over effectively in No-Gi grappling and Mixed Martial Arts competition. As a result of this realization, Eddie explored new ways to deconstruct previous Jiu Jitsu philosophies, in regards to technique and strategy, and center on precise, fundamental concepts that were being overlooked.
Eddie Bravo recognized the underlying importance of maintaining a superior clinching technique, the utilization of strong over-hooks and under-hooks, and the unrestricted advantage of demonstrating exceptional flexibility. Additionally, Eddie sensed the need for a linear system of techniques that could flow together seamlessly in training or competition. Complimenting these ideas with an open- minded nature and an innate sense of creativity, Eddie established the foundation of what is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.
But what exactly is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu? 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu can be defined as anything that works at a high level in No-Gi grappling and Mixed Martial Arts. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu's primary goal is to develop the most effective style of grappling when strikes to the head are involved. Whether to defend ones self in a street altercation, or to reach for victory in an MMA fight, the most important aspect of Jiu Jitsu to Eddie Bravo, is how Jiu Jitsu is applied when someone is trying to smash your skull.
10th Planet techniques are uniquely identified with positions such as the rubber guard and the twister, but more importantly, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu embodies a philosophy. It acknowledges the necessity of experimentation, the process of change, and the recognition of value in all styles of grappling. With this in mind, 10th Planet is able to avoid stagnation, and continuously evolve with a sport that is constantly changing.
In 2007, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu began to expand beyond the headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. With an appreciation for the creativity and success of Eddie Bravo's unique, No-Gi style of Jiu Jitsu, satellite schools would emerge, and orbit 10th Planet. As of 2012, 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Affiliates can be found in numerous locations across North America, and globally, with affiliates located in the UK, Australia, South Korea, and South Africa.
